Museum of the Renaissance

The original building was an old Renaissance house that was restored and rebuilt in the 1970s as a Renaissance Museum. The author of the project is arch. Kamen Goranov (arch. Kamen Goranov Bebinov, 1925-1985). The building is free standing in a large private yard. The main approach is from the yard. The building has a first floor, which from the north is almost completely dug in, and from the courtyard - from the south, it is completely above ground. There is another floor above it. The building has a massive construction. Parts of the first floor remain from the original, and the building above it is a reconstruction. The mezzanine structures and the roof are wooden, and the walls are made of brick, smoothly plastered and framed with wooden slats. The floors have preserved the original plan structure. The volume and facade treatment of the original building has been completely preserved. There are no visible traces of unregulated interventions and reconstructions. The building is in very good condition and functions as a museum.

Despite the fact that a large part of the building is a reconstruction of the original, it is a representative of one of the oldest layers of the city's architecture, namely the Black Sea Revival residential building of the 19th century. Arch. Goranov is the doyenne of highly qualified specialists in the field of cultural heritage preservation. Regardless of some compromises in purely scientific and architectural terms, which are the fruit of the time in which he worked, his restored Renaissance buildings are still a sustainable example of preservation in the 70s of the 20th century. In the same direction, even if there is a deviation from the original and the current criteria for restoration and preservation, the "Renaissance Museum - Varna" complex is material evidence of the beginning of the policy of preservation and protection of the city's architectural heritage.
