Ayazma fountain

The fountain is located along "Podvis" street, 250m in the north direction after the intersection with "Hristo Smirnenski" blvd. "Ayazma" means holy water. The date of construction refers to 1892, according to data from archival photos showing the year and the initials "H.D.Ch." As of 2015 captions are deleted. It is built entirely of large stone blocks, with a stone trough sunk into the ground. It is located under an old elm tree. In the upper part, a shallow niche was carved in which there was an inscription, which is now missing. In the lower plate there is a small, pointed niche. A spout is located near the trough. The fountain continues to work, and the water is safe to drink.

Historically, not only the fountain is significant, but also the place around it. Every year, on the day of St. Spirit, a meeting was held here, which was called "Kokardja Fair". On this day, Orthodox and Gagauz religious rituals were combined. The water was believed to be healing. In 1892 The Varna municipal council expropriated parts of the neighboring vineyards because the area around the fountain was not sufficient for pilgrims. From a historical point of view, the site is also valuable because it represents an example of the improvement of the city.

The fountains were an essential part of the urban culture of Varna in the 18th and 19th centuries.

In terms of urban planning, it is a significant element in the improvement of "Podvis" street.

The object is highly popular among the citizens of Varna. Many of them prefer the water of the Ayazma fountain to the water from the city's water supply network.
