Датировка

5th - 6th century

Information

The site is a complex of late antique water facilities and was discovered in 2018. during rescue archaeological excavations at 11 Sofroniy Vrachanski Street. It is located within the boundaries of the architectural and archaeological reserve "Odessos - Varna". According to the research archaeologists from the regional historical museum - Varna: Valeri Yotov and Alexander Minchev, this water complex represented a nymphaeum (city fountain) that functioned in the 5th - 6th centuries.

On the area of the plot subject to rescue excavations, were discovered, remains of a large architectural complex with a facade from the southwest, which falls under existing buildings today. Unfortunately, it has been destroyed almost to the ground. In its northwestern part, the building had two floors, with walls 0.85 to 1.05 m wide and a tiled roof. In the profiles from the northwest and west, its walls are preserved in superstructure, with construction in opus mixtum. The complex consists of several water features, other rooms and possibly open areas connected in a single whole: a large portico, a corridor, a rectangular pool, an elliptical pool, a row of rooms to the west of it and a room with a brick floor.

The finds - the movable cultural values found on the territory of the excavations at the site are very scarce: fragments of late antique ceramics - mainly from amphorae and lids, pieces of window glass, parts of marble facing plates, two bronze late antique coins, etc.

The circumstances surrounding the site make it very difficult its full study. The excavation site is confined within a private property and part of the structure remains beneath the street, neighboring properties and existing buildings. In addition, the relatively high groundwater level does not allow the exploration activity to go deep.

The condition of the site is currently satisfactory and it is about to be exposed during the current investment initiative.
