Датировка

The middle of the first half of the IV century BC.

Information

The site is the oldest fortification facility discovered so far on the territory of the ancient city of Odessos. It is dated from the mid-first half of the 4th century BC. Opened in 1987 an archaeological structure is a fortress wall with a square tower, the construction technology of which is characteristic of the early antique period - a monumental construction with dry stone construction of external and internal face masonry and an emplekton of quarry stone between them. The thickness of the wall is about 3.80m, and the tower has dimensions - approximately 10m. at 10.50 m.

The preserved fragment of the fortress wall is about 50m long. and is located relatively parallel to Archimandrite Filaret Street. During the survey at the end of the 1980s, the entire front part of the wall was examined and photographed, while its inner face (towards the existing buildings on "Archimandrite Filaret" Street) remained unexamined.

Currently, the oldest and most valuable fortress wall has not been found anywhere else within ancient Odessos, and the site in question is the only material evidence of the city's fortifications from this period.

Unfortunately, the technical condition of the fortress wall is quite bad at the moment. It is located within the boundaries of the well-known "hole" among Varna residents, which has mixed ownership and has been functioning as a paid parking lot for years. The object has not been socialized, it has not been preserved or restored, the terrain is overgrown with wild walnuts and scrub vegetation, as a result of which partial destruction is observed in its material substance. A current investment initiative in one part of the property will ensure the necessary intervention and proper treatment of this immovable cultural value that is so significant for Varna. According to the instructions of the Ministry of Culture and the National Museum of Natural History, the complete preservation of the fortress wall, conservation and restoration and subsequent exhibition with public access are planned.
