1880 - 1886
In 1879, a special committee, chaired by His Eminence Metropolitan Simeon (1840-1937), determined the site of a new cathedral in Varna - next to the city clock. In 1880 Prince Alexander I Battenberg approves a church project, modeled on the Peterhof Temple in St. Petersburg and recommends wide open space for the temple to be build. On August 22, 1880, a service and dedication was held by His Eminence Metropolitan Simeon and the priesthood. Prince Alexander I personally laid the foundation stone and construction continued until 1886. Many master builders took part in the construction. The most important contribution was made by Master builder Yanko Kostandi, who also builds the St. Nicholas Temple in the city. In May 1884 the commission entrusted the completion of the construction of the master Gencho Kanev from Tryavna. On August 30, 1886, the first Divine Holy Liturgy was administered. The temple is a three-nave basilica with an approximate size of 46 x 28 meters.
